Description
This great blue heron was resting on a cypress stump in Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee. Reelfoot Lake in northwest Tennessee is known as the "earthquake lake" because it was formed by earthquakes in 1811-1812. There are legends about its formation, mostly by Native Americans, but truly its beginnings were from that earthquake that made the Mississippi River flow backwards to fill the void created by that earthquake. That may be a legend or not.
Reelfoot Lake is shallow and contains many cypress trees, is an excellent fishery, and is home to numerous bald eagles, some permanent residents, some transient.
